It is encouraging to see certain celebrities come forth in an attempt to normalize and drop the stigma of mental health. This is what actress Kristen Bell has been doing for quite some time in various interviews. This week she opened up in a raw Instagram video regarding what she would tell her younger self regarding dealing with the slings and arrows of mental illness.
Bell has dealt with anxiety and depression throughout the course of her life and has even been prescribed medication to help better cope with these highs and lows.
In collaboration with The Child Mind Institute, who have utilized the hashtag #MyYoungerSelf, Bell offered a heartfelt and gentle speech that she gives directly to the camera.
What’s great about a well-known face giving a voice to these struggles in such a genuine and heartfelt way is that it helps others realize the common thread we all experience as humans.
There is such a misconception that the entertainment industry and Hollywood only consist of perfect people with pristine, glamorous lives.
What Bell is saying is that everyone has problems, even the rich and famous. Regardless of the amount of money, prestige or notoriety a person enjoys, they too can be susceptible to the ongoing struggle of mental health.
The 37-year-old mother of two reminded her younger self, and everyone watching is that she is deserving to feel beautiful and worthwhile and important on the days where she doesn’t wear makeup or is feeling depressed.
She’s really highlighting the ubiquitous nature of mental illness and the importance of mental health.
There are resources and tools out there to help in times when darkness and doubt take over. Bell stresses the fact that no matter what type of social status, everyone is human. No one is above the struggles of their own mind when faced with lives challenges.
Mental health is something that more and more people are discussing and with this type of open dialogue, more individuals can see that they aren’t alone in their plight.
