She told the Sunday Times: “I want to find the right word here, and maybe this is my interpretation, but I do feel I got discriminated against because I was a woman. I almost felt – maybe this is just my interpretation – I could have had a better chance if I’d been male.”
It is believed that Rita was supposed to be the next Rihanna but was never developed fully enough as an artist during the years that she was on the label.
Ora was allegedly brought on to do five albums but only released one in 2012.
In 2016, Roc Nation sued the pop singer for over almost $2.5 million for breaching her contract before coming to a settlement. The lawsuit claimed that they invested millions into her career from 2008 to 2015, which is when Rita ‘claimed she completed new music for her second album but the label hadn’t released it, instead focusing on representing other acts on its roster,’ according to the Daily Mail.
Jay Z was willing to release Rita from her contract with no problem; however, Sony Music required the label to countersue.
There were many rumors when Rita first came on the American scene that she was sleeping with Beyonce’s husband.
The whispers increased tenfold when the Queen Bey released “Lemonade” and referred to the woman that her husband was caught cheating with as “Becky with the good hair.”
Rita has always denied the speculation but insists that the song furthers proof because she doesn’t have “good hair.”
She explains: “Hey, all I want to say to that is, dude, if I were BWTGH, wouldn’t I actually have to have good hair? Look at it. It’s all weave and extensions.”
It’s safe to say we’ll never know for sure who Becky is.
